DEEKSHAK Classroom software

Good news for educational institutions as IIT Kharagpur Researchers have successfully developed an e-classroom software named as DEEKSHAK. During the pandemic, the educational institution and students are forced to provide and take education through online platforms. Considering the security, privacy issues, and altogether different requirements of the educational institution than the corporate sector, the researchers have come up with a platform dedicated to the education sector.

As twitted by Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank this is another initiative towards “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat”.

Some of the excellent attributes or features of the platform is that it primarily uses one-way communication for bandwidth efficiency, is a low bandwidth web-based software, focusing not students participating in a class as it happens in a meeting software, is on the teacher and the learning materials, logging of attendance of the students and can be accessed using a computer or a cell phone.

The current version of the software is developed by Prof. Raja Datta of Electronics and Electrical Communication Department with his postgraduate students and is used within a campus network (LAN) only.

The first phase of the software development is quite successful as it has been tested for 40 hours of classes conducted with approximately 300 students. The next version of the software is under development to improve its feature list including improving its security and privacy parameters.

Talking about DEEKSHAK, Prof. Raja Datta, “it is now a single session platform where the teacher would concentrate on the screen with the teaching materials while being able to view queries on a live chat box where each student can send in their queries. Students also have access to a doubt box where they can click to “raise their hand” and wait for the teacher to address it, as is done in a physical classroom. Teachers can also share documents with the students through the platform and even update notes on the documents in real-time.”
