Maths of the Sydney Opera House is part of the Opera House’s Digital Creative Learning program. The objective of the program is to provide free, accessible learning opportunities for school students.

Maths of the Sydney Opera House

The new video series ‘Maths of the Sydney Opera House’, is developed in collaboration with Eddie Woo. He is an award-winning maths teacher and star of the popular YouTube channel Wootube.

The video series consists of four episodes showing the creativity of maths by using the construction of the Opera House and design solutions of its architect Jorn Utzon to teach mathematical concepts.

Each episode is of approximately 5 minutes in length explains the science behind the Opera House’s construction. Practise worksheets are also provided for each episode for the students in the age group 5 – 10 years.

 Maths of the Sydney Opera House features four episodes:

  1. Acoustics – Mathematics to Make Your Ears Ring, deconstructs the science of acoustics and sound and features Mitchell Allen, Acoustics Lead from engineering firm Arup, whose founder worked directly with Utzon on the structure of the Opera House.
  2. The Purity of Geometry: describes how geometry and Utzon’s ‘Spherical Solution’ resolved the construction dilemma that the arched sails posed. Peter Mould, the former NSW Government Architect, explains how maths was a key component in enabling the unique design of the House.
  3. Calculating an Impossible Number investigates how maths was used to calculate the exterior tiling of the sails and features Ken Kobayashi, a BIM Integration Specialist who has digitally reconstructed the Sydney Opera House using modern computer technology.
  4. Nature Inspiring Design delves into how Utzon took inspiration from elements in the natural environment. The episode features Richard Johnson, an architect who worked directly with Utzon to ensure the Sydney Opera House could reflect its harbourside location.
