National Technology Day

India celebrates May 11th as National Technology Day. This day marks the anniversary of Pokhran nuclear tests conducted in 1998 and India’s achievements in the field of Space and Technology.

History of Nuclear Tests in India:

The Pokhran nuclear test was led by late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, whereas late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a nuclear state. To honor the day to Indian Scientists, he declared May 11 to be celebrated as “National Technology Day”. When India did its tests, it was the sixth country to join the ‘nuclear club’ of nations.

  • Project ‘Smiling Buddha’ was the first nuclear test at Pokhran which was carried out in May, 1974?
  • The second test ‘Operation Shakti’ conducted in May 1998 was a series of five tests of nuclear bomb explosions, at the Pokhran Test Range of the Indian Army. The project had five detonations out of which the first one was a fusion bomb while the other four were fission bombs.
