The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Bharat Ratna MGR on his birth anniversary. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said;
“Remembering Bharat Ratna MGR on his birth anniversary. He is widely admired as an effective administrator who placed top priority on social justice and empowerment. His schemes brought a positive change in the lives of the poor. His cinematic brilliance is also widely acclaimed.”
But do you know who MGR was?
Shri Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran was popularly known as M.G.R. who served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 till his death in 1987. He was an actor and filmmaker who later became a politician.
In 1972 he founded the AIADMK political party and was also the mentor of J. Jayalalithaa. It was in 1988 when M.G.R. was awarded India’s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna, posthumously.
